Session Recap

01

Description creates psychological distance

Describing a nighttime experience turns you into an observer of what is happening. Description focuses on what is directly present, while analysis searches for causes, meanings and future solutions. At night, that analysis can keep the brain’s problem-solving mode active, whereas description can create a helpful distance.

02

Use the senses to anchor attention

Touch, temperature, shape, colour, sound and smell provide concrete information about the present moment. Sensory detail gives attention somewhere specific to return when sleep worries begin expanding.

03

Practise without creating another rule

Detailed noticing skills become easier through daytime practice, but the practice does not need a strict schedule. The aim is to build familiarity so the skill is available and useful when the mind becomes busy at night.
