Being awake while the world appears to be asleep can create a powerful sense of loneliness. This feeling may intensify difficult thoughts and emotions. But sleep difficulties are experienced by many people, even though they are largely invisible at night.

Compassion begins with recognition

Acknowledging “this is difficult” means responding honestly to what is happening rather than dismissing or exaggerating it. Then being kind to yourself may involve changing your internal language, lowering tomorrow’s expectations or choosing appropriate support. It does not require pretending that the night is easy.
