Session Recap

01

Sleep pressure builds while you are awake

Adenosine gradually accumulates from the time you wake up, increasing your biological drive for sleep. A nap uses some of the sleep pressure that has accumulated, although it does not automatically ruin the coming night. Its timing and length affect how much opportunity remains for that pressure to rebuild.

02

Daylight keeps sleep timing on track

Daylight, particularly earlier in the day, helps anchor your body clock so that alertness and sleep-related signals occur at more appropriate times. This is one reason getting outside into daylight can influence sleep later.

03

Melatonin is a timing signal

Melatonin helps tell the body that biological night has arrived; it is not simply an “off switch” for consciousness. Taking more will not necessarily help if inadequate sleep pressure or heightened arousal is the main difficulty.
